Goodbye, green carpet!

Since we saw the house, Elaine has been DYING to get rid of the green carpet on the front stairs. We had talked about it and decided it might have to wait a bit since it wasn't the top priority.

About a week prior to closing we got an email from our homeowner's insurance broker. They had done an exterior assessment and because there were some rips in the carpet, they deemed it a tripping hazard. Therefore it had to go sooner rather than later. Elaine was ecstatic!

Ripping the carpet up was SO gratifying! It also proved to be a little tougher than expected in some spots.

A neighbor, Sean, noticed the struggle and came to make suggestions and help. I highly recommend wearing gloves for this as it does hurt your hands. I didn't have work gloves at the time, but used yellow cleaning gloves, which helped. This helped with the gripping as well as to reduce soreness. It takes a lot of strength! The technique was to cut in the crease of each step. I used a box cutter. This made the pieces smaller to handle and they came right up, mostly in one large piece.

The carpet was gone in no time and a mess of little green pieces covered the front stoop. After a little sweeping with a good old corn broom and stuffing the large pieces into bags (use the heavy black utility bags), it was gone.

Here is the after - notice the excitement!
We are really happy with the removal. Even though there is still a lot of glue to scrape up and finishing to do, it looks better already.

The next step will be to scrape the glue/adhesive. The dents need to be patched and the stairs sanded. Then we can paint the stairs to match the house. The stones are stone so need to be painted (mixed with sand to make them not slippery). Yes, it will definitely require maintenance, but it will be the most appealing and original look as well.

We are taking suggestions for the color of the front door as well. Elaine was thinking something to provide contrast, like red, but we are open to hearing other suggestions.

Here's the final comparison picture:

Today was the day we have been waiting MONTHS for. After much waiting, stress and a rollercoaster of emotions, it happened!

Maybe someday we will update with the whole story, but right now, it's too much to write. We are just happy to have this house to call home and eager to begin working on making it our dream home.
